This year Taylor Swift won nine MTV Video Music Awards. Taylor Swift was nominated for 11 Video Music Awards. She took home awards like “Best Pop”, “Song of the Year,” “Best Direction,” “Best Cinematography,” “Best Visual Effects”, and “Video of the Year” for her song “Anti Hero.”
She also won awards like “Show of the Summer” for her tour, The Eras Tour. Along with those she received “Album of the Year” for “Midnights” and “Artist of the Year.” Swift Started this year with 14 VMA wins. She received the most nominations for the 2023 VMA’s.
Sophomore Teagan Evans did not watch the VMA’s Tuesday night, but she did hear about the wins Swift got. Evans said, “I am very proud of her, I think that she does deserve it and she has a very strong fanbase, and that is deserved because she’s worked hard for a long time to get to where she is right now.”
Evans also said that “Anti Hero” and Midnights both deserved the awards they won. Evans ended her praise by saying she thinks “it’s very Taylor of her” to win nine awards in one night, and that “it’s very on-brand that she killed it at an award show.
Not only did Swift win awards that night though – she was also singing and dancing to the live performances and overall having a good time. Evans said, “I think that’s very important and gives us a very good insight into who Taylor is as a person, and that she not only is an advocate to her own career but is cheering on her musical friends.”
Sophomore Audrey Butts also did not watch the VMA’s, but said“Nine awards is a little absurd. I feel like there are definitely other people who might have deserved a music video award over her, but her music is fine.”
Swift has history at the VMA’s. In 2009, when Swift won “Best Female Video” for her song “You Belong With Me,” she was on stage giving her speech when Kayne West interrupted her saying “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” This was met with a shocked face by Beyoncé and booing from the crowd. Later in Swift’s documentary, “Miss Americana”, she said that she thought they were booing her while the crowd was really booing West for interrupting her.
When accepting her award for Video of the Year for “Anti Hero ” Swift said, “This is, this is unbelievable, I just want to say, the fact that this is a fan voted award means so much to me. I can’t believe that it was a year ago at the VMAs that I announced the Midnights” album. All I have to say tonight is thank you, I’m blown away, thank you so much.” Swift has worked very hard to get to where she is today and it’s very clear she has made her mark on the music community.
