Billy Joel is 74 years old as of May 2023, but he still maintains a consistent and active performing schedule. He is expected to add more performances to his schedule after the release of his new single and the possible release of a new album.

The 2024 Grammys was packed with memorable moments, but one of the biggest highlights was the award ceremony’s end. Billy Joel wrapped up the night with his new single, “Turn the Lights Back On,” which was released on the same day. Though Joel has put out many live versions of his songs in recent years, this single marks his first release of new music in over a decade.

When asked why he stopped writing new music, Joel told the New York Times that, “I have this fear of writing something that’s not good, I have a very high bar for myself.” He was finally ushered back into the studio, working with his producer and co-writer, Freddy Wexler.

Together, the two crafted the new song which has so far been received with overwhelming positivity. Gianna Werner, a senior at Millbrook, described her experience with the song: “I listened to it just cause I was curious about what it sounded like, but it really surprised me. It was really good. I literally cried listening to it.” True to his musical style, the song is an emotional ballad with a powerful piano instrumental. The lyrics describe a passionate relationship that has gone cold, and Joel questions whether or not it’s too late to bring back the spark. Though the song is presented through the lens of a relationship, it’s been speculated that the meaning could be connected to his music career, with Joel questioning whether it’s worth it to get back into the songwriting game.

As far as an album of new music, the answer is inconclusive. Reporters asked Joel on the Grammys’ red carpet if a new album was coming, and he responded that “It might be, it might not be…I’m just putting my toe in the water here.” Even in his drought of new music, Joel has had a consistent performance schedule with monthly concerts at the famed Madison Square Garden venue in New York City. However, these performances are supposed to wind down starting in July 2024. Joel’s age is a definite factor in this decision, and he may be unable to keep performing for much longer. Despite this, fans are excited to see his return and hopeful for the future of Joel’s career. An iconic artist has made a much-anticipated return, starting 2024 off strong as far as music is concerned.
