International pop sensation of the 90s and 2000s Britney Spears was arrested on charges of DUI. At around 9:30 p.m on March 4, Spears was stopped and handcuffed by Highway Patrol in Ventura County, CA. The singer had reportedly been speeding and driving erratically before law enforcement pulled her over and had her undergo sobriety tests. She was booked at about 3 a.m. the next morning and released at 6 a.m. later that same day. Spears’ Instagram account has been deleted following the incident.
This comes after an already eventful 2026 for Spears, who is set to appear in court May 4.
In January, the pop star sold her music catalog to publisher Primary Wave for a hefty $200 million. The sale likely gave a big boost to Spears’ net worth, which had been lagging behind those of her fellow stars due to the longtime conservatorship managed by her father.
Next, just mere hours before the news of Spears’ arrest broke, it came out that she had just received a restraining order against a man who, as the court documents the singer filed claim, has been harassing her for years. The documents say that the 51-year-old Louisianan has been bothering Spears since 2013, leading up to two instances of him showing up at her Los Angeles home in 2015 and 2025 respectively. The man has been ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from the pop superstar in the restraining order which lasts until 2030.
In the days since the arrest, many more details have emerged. One particularly disturbing piece of information was about her change in staff not long before her detainment. After returning from a trip to Mexico, it’s been confirmed that Spears fired her sobriety coaches and security guards just weeks before she was stopped and charged with driving under influence. A representative for the artist has also spoken out, saying in a comment to PEOPLE that this was “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.” Continuing to suggest the singer had been having a hard time, the rep stated that Spears can hopefully get the support she needs and is going to spend time with her sons, ages 19 and 20. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being,” they said to PEOPLE.
It appears that Spears’ sons, Jayden and Sean Federline, have been staying close to their mom after her jarring arrest. The car belonging to her younger son, Jayden was spotted outside Spears’ mansion on Friday March 6. Page Six reported that Sean has been around supporting his mother as well. In addition to her children, all three of the star’s ex-husbands have come out in defense of her. The first of the men, Jason Alexander, called for everyone “to slow down with the headlines,” in an Instagram post on Thursday, March 5. Her second husband with whom she had her two sons, Kevin Federline, made a statement to TMZ through his lawyer the next day. The lawyer said that Federline had talked to Spears since her arrest and hopes for the best for her. Her most recent husband, Sam Asghari, commented on the situation during a NewsNation appearance. He showed sympathy with her in light of all the attention on her arrest, saying, “If we learn from history, we have to understand the press could hurt somebody recovering from a situation like this.”
Fans are also concerned about the wellbeing of the star. The arrest has brought back memories of Spears’ very public mental health crisis in the late 2000s which resulted in the highly controversial conservatorship. Now, a divide is emerging online between those who are questioning whether a similar arrangement should be renewed or if the “…Baby One More Time” singer just needs a break from the constant pressure the world always thrusts on the Hollywood class.
