Beloved Hollywood star Eric Dane tragically passed away on Feb. 19, 2026, at 53 years old. Dane passed away from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ASL), which he announced in April of 2025, less than a year before his death. It was reported that his symptoms began 18 months earlier and had progressed to the point of him losing ability in his right arm by June of the same year. He was an American actor best known for his roles as Dr. Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan in the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” as Cal Jacobs. During the span of his long career in acting, he has been in 19 movies and 28 Television series.

Dane began his acting career in 1991, where he played minor characters in “Saved By The Bell” and later became involved with several other television shows after moving to Los Angeles, CA in 1993. His first major film debut was in the film “The Basket” in 2000, with his role as Tom Emery. The movie received mixed reviews, but it began his journey into the world of film. He followed up his first movie with roles in “Sol Goode”, “Feast”, and “X-Men: The Last Stand.” In between filming for these movies, Dane had both minor and recurring roles in 18 other television shows before finally appearing in his most notable role as Dr. Mark Sloan in episode 18 of season two of “Grey’s Anatomy.” He was originally supposed to be a special guest star, but strong positive audience feedback had him brought back to the show as a main character from season 3 until season 8, where his character was killed off due to injuries from a plane crash.
Eric Dane was born on Nov. 9, 1972, to Willian Melvin and Leah Dane in San Francisco, California. He and his younger brother were raised Jewish by their mother and lost their father to suicide at age seven. He was an athlete during his school years when he played for his school’s boys varsity water polo team before deciding to become an actor. His passion for acting really came alive after participating in his school’s production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons”. Dane married his now ex-wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, on Oct. 29, 2004. He and Gayheart were married for 14 years and had two daughters before she filed for divorce in February of 2018.
His final big role, aside from the “Famous Last Words” docu-series, was in a dark thriller called “Family Secrets.” The thriller is yet to be released, and no concrete date is set for it as of now. The movie’s plot revolves around a young man’s revenge plan against Dane’s character at a destination wedding by seducing Dane’s on-screen granddaughter. This will be his final acting credit and a window into how he spent his final years on set.
The day after his death, Netflix published his last televised interview as an episode of their docu-series, “Famous Last Words.” His last words in the interview were a message to his daughters, “I hope I’ve demonstrated that you can face anything, you can face the end of your days, you can face hell with dignity. Fight, girls, and hold your heads high. Billie and Georgia, you are my heart, you are my everything.”
