Whether you are voting for Hillary, Trump, Johnson, Stein, or you are just upset the Twenty-second Amendment has not been repealed, and Obama cannot run for a third term, you can probably all agree on one thing. That this presidential election has been interesting, to say the least. With sexual assault accusations towards Trump and Hillary’s infamous email scandal, this election has been a roller coaster of problematic behavior, or as senior Marcus Gibbs describes as, “A modern Shakespearean tragedy.” But do not think that this is first election where scandals have reached to this extent. Each presidential election has had its fair share of immoral behavior. Here is an analysis of the most noteworthy.

The most recent election scandal has to do with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s husband, Bill Clinton. In 1992 while Bill was running for president, model and actress Gennifer Flowers came forth saying that she had been involved in a twelve-year relationship with the candidate. When Bill denied these allegations on 60 Minutes, she brought forth tape recordings of phone calls they had had with one another. These tape recordings were never sent to lab testing; there are speculations that the tapes may have been doctored. Clinton later went on to win the presidential election, but he admitted to having sexual relations with Flowers in January of 1998.

Before President Richard Nixon became president, he served as vice president for Dwight D. Eisenhower, but can you believe that his campaign with Eisenhower almost went to shambles because of a cocker spaniel named Checkers? In 1952 when Nixon was running for vice president, he was accused of misconduct related to a fund created by his supporters that worked to reimburse him for all of his political expenses. With his position on the line, Nixon flew to Los Angeles and delivered an infamous half hour speech: the Checkers speech. The speech is titled this because he ended the speech by saying that he was going to keep one thing from his backers: his black and white cocker spaniel that his children loved. This speech saved his position and the election, as Eisenhower ended up being elected president, and Nixon served as president sixteen years later.

We all know that Andrew Jackson was one of the more problematic presidents, but many may not know that his election was almost lost due to a cause not even involving him. In 1794, Rachel Robards attempted to file for divorce against Lewis Robards. He agreed to file for divorce, but the process took a long time, and he was disgruntled over the ordeal. Later Andrew and Rachel Jackson eloped- only they had eloped while she was still married to Robards. This was used against Andrew Jackson during his 1828 campaign with words such as “adultery” and “bigamy” being thrown at him during the election. He ended up winning his campaign, but Rachel Jackson ironically ended up passing away before he was able to take his seat in office, something that consumed his sanity for nearly his whole first term.

The 2016 election could be considered to be chaotic, but when are politics not? Many citizens have given up on this election, saying that they are not going to vote this year, but that can be a costly mistake. Junior Sydney Horowitz adds, “All of the candidates from all branches of government work for the betterment of the people, and citizens should want to have a say in their own well being.” Do not allow these scandals to keep you from voting, and most importantly, do not allow these improprieties to take your patriotism away.
