Sunday, September 24 the Pittsburgh Steelers players, coaches, and staff members all decided to stay in the locker room during the National Anthem prior to their game against the Chicago Bears. Many teams’ players have been protesting in some form or another on the field by either sitting, kneeling, locking arms, or holding their fists in the air. The Steelers marked the first such time in the NFL that a team did not come out during the anthem. The decision by the team was not unanimous though, as one player came out of the locker room during the anthem and stood in the tunnel. This man was former Army Ranger Alejandro Villanueva, the team’s starting left tackle. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in his statements after the game said that the players of the team discussed their protest, and they could not come to 100% agreement on what to do during the anthem. Therefore the team decided to completely remove themselves for the anthem altogether. There were protests found during every game so far this week, most being fueled by comments made by President Trump earlier in the week. President Trump said, he wishes one of the NFL owners would just fire the players who did not stand during the Anthem.
