Yesterday, January 8, the Alabama Crimson Tide won the College Football National Championship. This can be marked as one of the most eventful and unpredictable games in recent history. The Alabama Crimson Tide played the SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs in the fourth edition of the playoff format. This is Alabama’s 17th overall title and second in the playoff era. This includes Coach Saban’s sixth national title tying  him with Alabama great Bear Bryant for most all time. He also extended his win streak against former assistants in this game, as he beat his former DC Kirby Smart, making him 12-0 against those former assistants.

The game ended in overtime after a rambunctious regular time. The game started off with Georgia rallying off 13 unanswered points in the first half. Alabama’s offense was silent the entire first half, not scoring once and missing a field goal. So to come out and start the second half Coach Saban made the gutsy decision to play true freshman Tua Tagovailoa, who had not taken a meaningful snap the entire year. That was a decision that turned the game on its ear. Tua got the Tide on the board for the first time in the third quarter with a touchdown making the score 13-7. Georgia true freshman quarterback Jake Fromm bounced right back and got a touchdown of his own, pushing the game back to a 13 point lead, 7-20. Alabama’s offense kept clicking, but it was their defense that made the biggest impact keeping Georgia at those 20 points. Tua and the Crimson Tide were then able to find themselves scoring multiple times in the fourth and tying the game at 20-20 when they got the ball back with less than two minutes left. The Tide brought the ball down the field and got the ball into field goal range with just four seconds left when Alabama senior kicker Andy Pappanastos took the field to kick the 36 yard potential game winning field goal. When he kicked the ball, he missed wide left and it was headed into overtime.

In overtime, Georgia got the ball first and scored on a field goal, so when Alabama got the ball, they needed to either kick a field goal and send the game to double overtime, get a touchdown and win the game, or miss and lose. Tua Tagovailoa took the field one last time and threw a 41 yard bomb to fellow true freshman DeVonta Smith, and the Tide won the game. Alabama finished their season with a 14-1 record, and Georgia finished with a 14-2 record.
