The news is biased; we have to face it. No matter what outlet you get your information from, it has a spin, and no one can get around it. Popular organizations such as MSNBC and The Huffington Post are commonly regarded as having a liberal slant, just like Fox News and The Economist, are known to have a conservative spin. The question is not whether or not there is bias out there; the question is whether there is an outlet that reports the facts and just the facts. Many people do not believe there is a single news organization that will present the raw facts with absolutely no bias. It is challenging to keep your opinion apart from the facts, but that is precisely the job of a journalist.

It is possible to keep oneself and one’s opinions out of potential stories, but everyone has an opinion, whether they admit to it or not. When asked if he thought there are unbiased sources in the media, sophomore Preston Hewett responded, “There may be sources that are close, but the information given is only half of what bias is. I believe that most bias is the information that is not given.” If you watch the news, you know that the news organizations will withhold information if it goes against their chosen angle or political platform.

Bias in the news is not a new concept; bias has been around as long as people have been. However, there has been a rise in the amount of recognition by the people of bias in the news by readers since Donald Trump announced his campaign for president of the US in June of 2016. His rambling about “fake news” started to stir some people and made them start realizing that much of what they saw borders on propaganda. Fake news is an actual type of yellow journalism, in which someone intentionally writes an article with blatant misinformation with the intentions of misleading people who read it.

People should be aware of just how prominent bias is in the news and to be able to recognize it as untrustworthy information. I will defend journalism until I no longer can, but when you cannot trust a single thing that is being reported, that is when something is seriously broken, and we need to address it.
