Mumble rap, also known as Soundcloud rap, has been a popular style of music in today’s pop culture. Many others know emo rap to be a subgroup under mumble rap. This type of music is just as it sounds; rappers mumble their lyrics and tend to string words together. The lyrics are usually incomprehensible and do not make sense to the average listener. The mumble rap trend started on SoundCloud and quickly spread to other platforms, eventually turning into a mainstream style. Another style of rap that falls under the SoundCloud category is Emo Rap. Emo rap is a combination of beats and rapping similar to the hip-hop genre while including lyrics similar to those found in emo music.

Some people may argue that mumble rappers are not true musicians because they seem as if they are lazy or not trying; however, I believe each person has their own type in music, and every style is valid whether one likes or not. While you may like country or pop, the boy sitting across from you in English might be listening to his Soundcloud rap playlists. Some artists that gained popularity from the Soundcloud platform are XXXTENACION, Lil Peep, and Migos. Again, all these artists could be classified as either mumble or emo rap.

Musical expression is an important outlet for many teens as it provides a mental escape.  Junior Cameron Mehraby is very passionate about this style: “Emo rap is not some stupid trend; it is music that helps kids feel less isolated about their feelings and makes them feel understood. 21 Savage has some deep lyrics, and one of his songs ‘Nothin New’ talks about violence inflicted upon the African American community and brings light to the subject.” Emo rap is often known for the deep lyrics that bring up some controversial topics. Emo rap is a combination of beats and rapping similar to the hip-hop genre while including lyrics similar to those found in emo music.

Overall, the app SoundCloud has been a platform that has given many artists a way of free musical expression and even provided a new type of music that is now listened to daily.
