Drying before they are filled with Christmas gifts and distributed to friends, mason jars painted by senior Hannah Stroup are a perfect example of how fun DIY Christmas gifts can be. Making presents for your friends and family is oftentimes easier and more fun than rushing out to buy gifts last-minute.

Do you wait until the last minute to buy Christmas gifts for your friends and family every year? No worries! This year, you can easily prepare your presents without even leaving your house. There are plenty of do-it-yourself gift ideas outside of the basic bath bombs and Christmas cookies.

A versatile gift option is a phone case with pressed flowers inside. Start by pressing flowers between two pieces of wax paper inside a heavy book. Put some extra books on top to add weight, and leave them to press for two to four weeks. Then, use tiny dots of glue to stick the flowers inside of a transparent phone case. You may also want to top with casting resin, which can be purchased at most craft stores, if you want to ensure stronger adhesion. Simply pour it over the case and spread it along the edges. Finally, allow the phone case to dry. Given that there is only a week before Christmas, you may want to keep this gift in mind for a future holiday.

This year, VSCO girls, or basic Gen-Z girls who love scrunchies, Hydroflasks, and oversized tees, have entered the spotlight thanks to Instagram and TikTok influencers. For all of your VSCO friends, make sets of stickers for their Hydroflasks and laptops. Print off pictures of your choosing, place clear packing tape on parchment paper, and arrange the sticker printouts on the tape. Then, put more tape overtop the printed stickers. Finally, cut around the shape of the image, leaving half an inch to an inch of tape on the edges. The recipients of your gift will be able to peel the parchment paper off of the back of the sticker and place it anywhere they want!

For the tea and coffee lovers in your life, there are a couple options for fun and unique presents. A festive coffee cup sleeve can be crafted using scissors, a sock, and a hot glue gun. Measure the midsection of a travel coffee cup, and add an inch or two to the number you get. Cut the top off of a holiday sock, and turn it inside out. Fold down about an inch of the edge you already cut, and secure it with hot glue or a needle and thread. Then, turn the sock right side out, and fit it onto a coffee cup to give to someone you know. If the person you have in mind prefers tea over coffee, they are sure to love a Christmas tea tree, or a miniature Christmas tree made of tea bags. Begin by rolling green pieces of cardstock paper into a tall cone-like structure, layering them as needed to reach your desired height. Use scissors to trim the excess paper so that the bottom of the tree is even. Next, add green tea bags with paper casing all around the tree, starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top. Add a star cutout to the top, and you are done!

As an avid fan of DIY crafts, senior Hannah Stroup said, “I love taking the time to hand-make gifts for my friends for Christmas, and a lot of the time it seems like they appreciate it more because I put a lot of work into it.” So, before you rush out to the store to get your Christmas shopping done, give DIY gifts a try instead. They just might turn out to be better than something you would spend money on.
