Star tennis player Roger Federer lost his final tennis match this past Friday at the Laver cup in London England following his announcement of retiring. Federer played with friendly rival Rafael Nadal against the American duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe in a head-to-head doubles match of Team Europe vs.Team World. Nadal and Federer put up a fight, but could not pull out the win. The final score of the match was 6-4, 6-7, and an extremely close tie-breaker of 9-11. Following the final rally, Federer hugged his teammate in addition to Sock and Tiafoe, and began to cry, knowing that it was his final competitive match.

Federer announced his retirement to the world on Instagram on September 15 through a letter to his tennis family and fans. He stated, “Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.” This announcement was a big loss for the tennis community, as Federer is one of the most beloved and successful tennis players of all time. He ended his career with an incredible 20 Grand Slam wins, number one world ranking, and 103 total title wins. He was not only accomplished, but also adored by tennis fans across the world and even his competitors. Player John Isner posted on Instagram,“Thank you for the countless memories you’ve given everyone over the years. Was the biggest honor of my career to share the court with you.” Roger Federer was a beast on the court and will continue to inspire this tennis community for years to come.
