If you’ve taken the time to stop and admire the artwork Millbrook Wildcats create, then you’ve probably seen at least one of senior Sam Cutler’s works. Her artwork is frequently on display throughout the halls. In addition to her drawings and paintings, Cutler is a member of the National Art Honors Society, Psychology Club, and tech theater.

From a very young age, this exemplary senior has always been involved in studio art and design. “I’ve been making art ever since I was little, and it’s always been my favorite hobby because of how creative and expressive I can be with what I make,” Cutler says.

Cutler says her favorite class this year is AP Art, which Mr. Davis teaches. “The class is challenging at times, but very chill. We spend almost every single class just making art and talking about art,” she says. Currently, students in the class are working on, “A series project where we take our sustained investigation focus and create 3 works. For example, my focus is on emotions and my series project is about 3 out of the 5 stages of grief.”

Mr. Davis describes having Cutler  as, “bright, cheery and pleasant in class. Everyone seems to really like having her around. She always participates in conversations, discussions, critiques, and art-making with a smile on her face. She is very open to criticism and uses feedback to improve the quality of her work.” While this senior is in AP Art, her skill level has been exemplary throughout her years at Millbrook. Cutler was placed into Proficient Art Honors as a freshman, which very few students have ever done.

However, she stopped enrolling in Art classes for the next two years. This year, Mr. Davis is very happy to have her in his class, “Missing a few years of art was a challenge she was ready to tackle. This year, I have seen her grow in her conceptual and technical approach to art making, but the thing that impresses me the most is her confidence in taking risks with her work. She is curious and constantly discovering new ideas and techniques to push her work.”

In addition, Cutler is involved in many art and non-art-related extracurriculars here at Millbrook. As a member of the National Art Honors Society, she helps to organize and gather students who want to volunteer around the school with art-related events and “create art for the fun of making art.” She is also involved in Psychology Club, which is a “monthly meeting of students interested in psychology, where we learn and talk about all aspects of psychology.” Finally, this wildcat is a techie for Millbrook theater productions. Cutler says, “I’m a part of the props crew, where we collect, make and find anything that actors move and pick up during scenes.”

After graduation, Cutler says that she isn’t certain whether or not she will continue pursuing a career in art, but that she “will keep creating art as a hobby after graduation and probably for the rest of my life.” Despite this, Mr. Davis says, “I am so excited to see her AP Portfolio develop!”
