The month of February has arrived and it’s time to celebrate Black History Month. This month is to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of African Americans. It is also a month to reflect on all the trials and tribulations they have to face as people of color, both past and present.

Here at Millbrook, there is a Black Student Union (BSU) who gather together about once a month to address social issues about African Americans. The union is what BSU member De’zaria Lucas says is, “a safe place to talk and a place where there is a huge sense of community.” In the BSU, students address issues and topics that other students don’t typically talk about in their standard classes. The BSU has decided to put on a showcase, “Black History Through the Fazes of Art,” to educate students about African American culture. The showcase will have different performances using several different styles of art including: visuals, poetry, dances, songs, and short skits.

Black History is a major topic that deserves to be recognized and talked about every day. One month is not enough, African Americans deserve to be appreciated on a daily basis. “The BSU finds this important because when you look at Millbrook from the outside or through the lens of leadership roles it’s sometimes blindingly white,” says the BSU director Mr. Abdul-Aziz or as most students know him, Mr .A.

The students in the union have created this showcase as a powerful reminder that Black History needs to be shown to the world, and especially the struggles African Americans have gone through and the accomplishments that contribute to the story of America. The performance promises to be impactful towards students and to remember how African Americans have contributed to American art and culture.

Come watch the showcase during the second and fourth periods on Friday, February 17.  Ask your teachers to fill out the Google form found in their emails to attend the performance!
