As winter approaches and we roll into the first week of December, the Millbrook Women’s Wrestling team is kicking off with an impressive start. The ladies are starting the season with a 2-1 record after dominating last year. In 2024-2025, the ladies saw one of their best seasons yet, winning conference championships alongside the men’s team. In addition, the ladies’ team sent both their freshmen, Isla Daniels, and their sophomore, Lisa-Jean Foley, to state championships, where Lisa-Jean placed. Now that the 2025-2026 season has commenced, the women’s team is hoping to take the title of conference champs once again and hopefully send some of these amazing ladies to state.
While the women’s team has been commanding the conference, it doesn’t come without challenges. The ladies face many challenges, including long practices, intense conditioning, and the pressure of maintaining weight. With all these stressors, it’s essential that the team has a strong bond and work to support each other.
Head coach Scott Saby, who has been on the wrestling coaching staff for years, says that making sure the team maintains a close bond is essential because it means, “We can lean on each other when things are difficult and we can celebrate successes with each other.” He helps ensure that the team keeps this bond by, “having conversations with everyone to make them feel welcome and to get to know them a little more.” He also mentions that though this sport has its highs and lows, coaching it has made him a “better person.”
Though Coach Saby offers as much support as he can, the girls also have to make sure they are there for each other. They make sure to do so since showing up for each other can make all the difference on competition days.
Millbrook sophomore, Sofia Gould ,shares that the team supports each other in many ways. Gould says, “We all cheer each other on, help each other make weight, and always try to help improve each other.”
Now a junior, Lisa-Jean states that she helps show support for her teammates by stepping up and being a team leader. She does this by guiding her teammates and offering help by saying things like, “Yes, this is how you do it. No, this isn’t how you do it,” or by telling her teammates encouraging sentiments like, “Let me show you, let me help you.”
Despite the challenges the sport throws their way, the ladies have learned many lessons, such as mental toughness, and have created an incredible environment where they have shared many fond memories with each other.
Sofia Gould shares that one of her favorite memories is the tournament in Asheville, where she says, “The bus ride there was so much fun, bonding with everyone and talking to more people.”
Lisa-Jean shares that her personal favorite memory was from her sophomore season when she attended the state championships with teammates Campbell Tuffs and Isla Daniels. She says that she and Isla “shared some really funny moments” and, as a result, “got a lot closer.”
Now that the ladies have kicked off another amazing season, lots of opportunities and challenging demands are headed their way. But it’s nothing this team can’t handle. Through hard work and support from each other, all the ladies are determined to have another amazing season where, if everything goes to plan, they will win the conference for the third year in a row. If you’re interested in supporting the amazing women’s wrestling team, come out to support their home game on December 4th, against Heritage.
