A big part of Millbrook’s culture is our sports. Millbrook has an amazing blend of talented athletes and dedicated students who love to cheer for their peers. Now that it’s mid-February, the spring sports season is getting ready to start! If you’re new to Millbrook or just looking to try something new, it’s a great time to consider joining one of Millbrook’s amazing spring sports teams or attending games to cheer on your classmates. For girls, there’s women’s soccer, track and field, women’s lacrosse, stunt, and softball. Then, for boys, there’s boys lacrosse, boys tennis, track and field, boys golf, and baseball.
Girls lacrosse and soccer had tryouts from February 16th through 18th, plus Softball tryouts were February 16th and 17th. Then, track and field has been preparing for the start of their season on the track as well. For the boys, boys lacrosse had tryouts the week of the 16th, along with baseball, tennis, and golf.
While Millbrook sports are a big deal and typically tryouts are highly competitive, you don’t have to get on a sports team to be involved. Most teams are looking for a student team manager who will help track game stats and manage equipment. If you’re looking to be a team manager, you should email the coach of that specific sports team and set up a time to talk about filling that position if the team is in need. Also, if you’d rather be a spectator and cheer on your peers, each sports team would greatly appreciate any fans!
If you’re still not convinced about getting involved with the spring sports at Millbrook, listen to some of the current players’ testimonies!
Jayne Burich, a senior varsity Lacrosse player, said, “The women’s lacrosse team has an energetic environment that makes both practices and games competitive and enjoyable. From watching films to running drills, there’s a strong sense of family throughout the season. Many of the girls on the team, including myself, had never played lacrosse before coming to Millbrook, but joining my freshman year gave me an outlet to become an active member of the program and truly enjoy the experience along the way.”
Dima Alawar, the new women’s varsity soccer team manager, described her experience by saying, “I’ve always been a supporter from the student section, but now I’m excited to be a supporter with the team from the sideline. I only played soccer as a kid, but I believe more people should be a team manager for sports at Millbrook because pouring energy into this is rewarding in many ways.”
Hudson Benedict, a senior boys varsity lacrosse player, said, “Boys lacrosse is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. The games and practices are competitive and fun. More people should get involved if they can.”
Millbrook’s senior superlatives should be suggestive enough that Millbrook pride and athleticism are prominent, with many students being nominated for most athletic and most Wildcat pride. While the Millbrook “Spirit Cards” competition has passed for the Winter sports season, there is a chance that there will be another opportunity in the Spring. If you missed the announcement of the winners, or are unaware of what the “Spirit Cards” are, they’re a card that students can pick up and track the different sporting events that they’ve been to throughout the season. After a certain amount of time, cards are collected, and the three students who attended the most sporting events will get giftcards to different restaurants and fast-food places in Raleigh. Overall, there is truly no reason not become involved in Millbrook sports, and each sports team appreciates any support, so why not show some Wildcat Pride and participate however you can!
