North Carolina predicted weather patterns. Intense storm January 9th, 2024

A massive storm struck North Carolina January 9. The rain gradually intensified as we moved into the afternoon producing strong winds up to 40mph and two to four inches of rainfall. Monday night, Governor Roy Cooper signed an executive order declaring a State of Emergency for today’s expected storm.

There were high chances of isolated tornadoes, floods, and flash floods near rivers and low roads all across the state. Chapel Hill apartment complexs were evacuated after the storm caused sever flooding with water up to the knees. Orange and Chatham counties suffered from flooded roads and torn down power lines. Orange County reported at least 50 power outages leaving around 4,000 occupants without power.

According to CBS 17, “Many schools in Central North Carolina have decided to dismiss early on Tuesday or have students learn from home.” This included Millbrook Magnet High School. The schoolreleased its students three hours early so they can avoid driving home in the brunt of the storm.

Millbrook Student, Keria Brock states, “Personally, I think releasing students early was a good effort for the safety of students and staff, however, it may have been smarter to cancel school the entire day. Last-minute decisions to change the schedule can make it difficult for parents who have to pick up their kids and students who take the bus”.

Damages are still being assessed and repaired.
