Anéssa Myers was voted one of the Outstanding Seniors for the 2025-26 school year! She has done it all, from being involved in many clubs and participating in sport in and outside of Millbrook, volunteering programs in and outside of school, and balancing all this with being in the IB DP program.
Anéssa is very involved in Millbrook through her leadership in clubs and athletics. She is the Co-Editor-In-Chief of Millbrook’s newspaper, The Cat Talk, she is Co-President of the English Honors Society, Co-Crew-Chief of Millbrook’s Costume Crew, Social Media Liason of the Crochet Club, Videos Chair of MEB, member of NAS, NHS, Student Equity Team, and also as a member of Millbrook’s flag football team, showing her dedication to Millbrook.
She is equally as impressive outside of school, she does many things, such as working at Outback Steakhouse as a hostess and playing flag football for Carolina United. She also works for Shea Butter FC, a company that focuses on black women in soccer and has podcasts. Anéssa attends NC Courage games, taking pictures and interviewing players for the company. Also, she is a member of the teen board for a nonprofit called Addis Jemari, which focuses on helping Ethiopian people and children with education, economic independence for people, Christianity, and social support.
Anéssa said some of her greatest achievements in high school were being a junior marshal. Junior Marshal is given to the 50 people with the highest GPA in junior year. She was also inducted into the service club in her junior year which is something the school picks you for adding to her impressiveness. When asked about being inducted into the service club, Myers said, “I got to help out with the service club by inducting new people this year, and help with the assembly and stuff, and that was really fun”.
Some academic achievements she has gone on to say she is proud of are being on the A/B honor roll for all four years, maintaining a 3.9 unweighted GPA, and being a part of the IB program, which makes her really proud, too. She is also very proud of being in many clubs and activities around campus, like being Co-Editor-in-Chief of the school’s newspaper, MHS Cat Talk, Co-President of the English Honors Society, and being a part of Millbrook’s flag football team.
She describes herself as hardworking and dedicated, which is clearly shown through the clubs and activities she participates in. She tries to put all her effort into all of the things she does to try for the best result. She would also describe herself as driven because she has set big goals like being a journalist and works hard to achieve them. She can easily back these statements up with all her classes, clubs, and outside activities. On top of her impressive academic skills, Anéssa likes to think of herself as a friendly person who can be on the same page as a lot of people and tries to be welcoming to all people. She also describes herself as a compassionate person who tries to make things as easy as possible for people.
Anéssa says she wants to be a political journalist in the future. She got into UNC Chapel Hill on an assured admit to their Journalism program. She has not officially made her college decision, but said she will likely go to UNC Chapel Hill. Her regular college decisions include UNC Wilmington, Princeton, Syracuse, Boston University, Duke, American University and George Washington University.
When asked how she got into writing, she said, “Growing up, I was homeschooled until I was in 3rd grade. I was in school, and I centered a lot of my education around reading, while my mom kind of came up with it. I would read for my schoolwork, but after that, I would still want to keep reading, and I would just read so many books all day, all the time. And I just really fell in love with literature. So it’s just reading that started the passion, and then once I got into high school, was when I realized that I loved to write as well.”
Regardless of what she chooses to do or where she chooses to go, Anéssa will bring her hard work, dedication, and amazing attitude with her. She has made a wonderful and successful career for herself both at Millbrook and in the future. She definitely deserves to be one of the sixteen to receive this award and I’m sure she will make an amazing future for herself.
