Over the past couple weeks, a great deal has been happening around Millbrook with many clubs having some of their first meetings up. Some of these many clubs that met over the past weeks were Art Club and National Art Honor Society (NHAS). Art Club and NAHS are two clubs run by art teacher Ms. Johnston that aim to further students’ art skills outside of class and be an educational environment.
Art Club is a place where all students are welcome to practice art and express themselves creatively. NAHS is similar but is an honor society, meaning students must apply and pay a small fee to join. National Honors Art Society also requires students to complete 10 art-based service hours. If these hours are completed students will receive an honor society chord at graduation. While the clubs have different requirements, they often share a classroom during meetings.
Recently, the clubs have leaned into the spooky season and met with special effects professional Lillie Falco, also known as Gore Queen SFX, to both practice and learn more about special effects makeup. According to her website, GORE QUEEN FX, Lillie Falco is an experienced professional with over 20+ years experience in the makeup industry. Mrs. Falco attended Joe Blasco School in Orlando, Florida, with diplomas in not only special effects makeup, but also advanced prosthetics. From her, students were able to learn how to apply special effects makeup and develop technique.
Sophomore Ava Briel speaks on Mrs. Falco, saying that, “All of our thanks go out to Mrs. Falco, she was such a kind and patient instructor and it really felt as though she cared about her profession and cared about teaching us new things.” Briel also says that, ”The entire special effects workshop experience was amazing” and that not just her, but the entire club had such a fun time with Mrs. Falco.
Overall, Art Club and NAHS’s most recent meeting was a fun way to teach students new art skills and garner excitement for the upcoming Halloween season. Art club and NAHS are constantly trying new things! They welcome you to join them on November 12th for bleach dye t-shirts! Feel free to stop by Ms. Johnston’s room during lunch or before school for information on the upcoming November meeting.
